Tempus fugit!! The last four weeks have just flown by with another busy month on the European Legends Tour. The “travelling circus” keeps rolling on meaning both recovery and maintaining energy levels are imperative to playing good golf.
The month started with one of the best events on the global senior golfing calendar; The Senior British Open at Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland – one of the world’s best golf courses. The last time I played at Carnoustie was the1999 Open Championship and I have been looking forward to returning since this year’s schedule was announced. Back in 1999 the rough was four feet high and Paul Lawrie prevailed over Jean van der Velde in one of the most infamous finishes in major golf history. Thankfully this year the rough was more manageable making the playing experience more enjoyable. Also adding to the enjoyable experience, my brother Ken flew over from New Zealand to caddy for me. Four decent rounds meant a solid finish.
The next event, the Senior British PGA Championship, was an hour up the road just outside of Aberdeen at Trump International Links. Carnoustie is one of the world’s great links courses that have stood the test of time, and I have no doubt that Trump International will soon join that list. The views and architecture have to be seen to be believed. When you go Scotland make sure this course is on your list. As for my golf – another solid finish.
The following week I travelled to Nailcote Hall in England to play in a unique event that I had heard a lot about over the years. The British Par 3 Championship was first played in 1933 and Tony Jacklin has been the host for a number years. The course is 9 holes of par 3s. The longest club I carried was a 9 iron. But with very, very small and undulating greens it is a great challenge. It was a fun event to play in…….. definitely different to the usual tournaments.
Next……… from the heart of England to the heart of Africa. The Zambia Legends event is a new tournament on the European Legends Tour and for many of us it was our first time to this beautiful country. On the Wednesday, 8 of us pros were invited to play at the president’s State House where he has his own golf course. The course is only 9 holes but with giraffes, zebras and impalas roaming the grounds it was a great experience. The people we met in Zambia were very friendly and made us feel very welcome. Unfortunately, there was no time for a safari or to see Victoria Falls but maybe next time.
A week off then I’ll hit the road again. Playing in four different countries over four weeks…………….. more frequent flyer miles!!!!!
