GOLF PERFORMANCE with Ben Percival (PGA PROFESSIONAL)
As a PGA teaching professional here at Wembley Golf Course I fortunately spend my time helping golfers of all ages and experience try to play better golf. While this means different things to different players, a common request I hear from most of my students is they want to become more ‘consistent’ .
When a student comes for a lesson there is generally an underlying technical component I can help a player get better at , as well as improving their golf concepts and understanding of the game.
However in their search to be more ‘consistent ‘ and ‘predictable’ I also need to get them to take care of the parts of their performance that they can fully control on every single shot or round.
These things can be implemented immediately with a little discipline and planning ……..and can lead to improved golf performance very quickly.
Be consistent at these things to be ‘consistent’ ;
* WARM UP – get the mind and body ready before practice and a your round. Hit balls on the range, hit some putts, perform some stretches.
* CHECK EQUIPMENT – are your grips and clubs clean, wet weather gear ? Umbrella ? , enough balls and tees in the bag. All 14 clubs are in the bag .
* HYDRATION AND FOOD – hydrate your body before a round, beginning the night before. Especially in the summer months. Take some food and drink onto the course to help you maintain energy and concentration levels.
* KNOW YOUR DISTANCES – better players make better decisions on the golf course. Learn EXACTLY how far you hit each of your clubs through measuring and recording (easily done on Trackman) not by guessing.
* PRE SHOT ROUTINE – develop an individual pre shot routine that you will do every shot in every round. This is one crucial thing you have full control of every day.
* POST SHOT ROUTINE – spend a few seconds after each shot to quickly assess and learn about your patterns. What did I do well ? What could I have done better ?
* COURSE STRATEGY – make a game plan for your course and have the discipline to stick to it. Which clubs to hit ? Which areas to try and avoid ? Understand your shot patterns and tendencies and develop a personal plan.
All of these things can be done with some planning and organisation and will help in the never ending search for consistency. With these things AND a better golf swing , you will certainly get closer to your full golfing potential.
